2018 Met Gala: Best and Worst Dressed

I don't really pay that much attention to the Met Gala, but when I see some of the outfits on the Today Show or on Twitter, I usually end up scrolling through a few photo galleries to see all of the fashion. This year's theme was "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination," and it was interesting to see how the stars interpreted that. So here are my thoughts on who was hot (and who was not) at this event:

BEST DRESSED

Rihanna: She always knows how to make a statement, and I thought this bedazzled and bejeweled outfit was a work of art. I'm not such a fan of the head piece, but I get it with the religious theme. 

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez: This couple looked AMAZING! She looks so sexy in this dress (That slit, those shoes!), and even though I think A-Rod is a man-hoe, he looks very sharp in this all-black tuxedo.

Gigi Hadid: I think this is my favorite gown from the entire night. She looks absolutely perfect, and the outfit is just the right mix of sexy, sparkly, and divine.

Yara Shahidi: I don't know who she is (I'm usually out of the Hollywood loop), but this dress is so precious. It's not as big and flashy as most of the other outfits at this event, but it's subtlety makes it even prettier.

Scarlett Johansson: While I miss her blonde hair, this dress is so chic and beautiful. Clearly I like pretty things.

Amal Clooney: I realize this isn't the first skirt-over-pants look we've ever seen, but I thought this one was particularly striking. I like the juxtaposition of the floral print and the simple navy pants.

Katherine Langford: I haven't seen any of this actress' work, but she looks like the hypothetical offspring of Ashley Judd and Natalie Portman (am I right or am I right?). I love this simple red dress with the bedazzled belt and cape. This is the kind of outfit I would wear to an event like this!

Blake Lively: Anyone who knows me knows I have a HUGE girl crush on Blake Lively (read my previous blog post about her movie The Age of Adeline). So of course I think she looks absolutely beautiful. While it's not my favorite of the night (the brocade-like fabric looks too heavy to be 100% graceful), she wears this Versace gown very well.

Amanda Seyfried: She looks like a regal sun goddess! From the tips of the delicate crown to the volume of luxurious fabric puddling around her feet, this look is gorgeous from head to toe.

Brooke Shields: While the look isn't as exciting as many of the others, a classic, sleek dress paired with diamonds never gets old.

Kate Bosworth: While she kind of looks like a bride (which for me is a weird thing to look like unless it's actually your wedding day), I am not surprised that this Oscar de la Renta gown is feminine and gorgeous; I pretty much love anything with his name on it.

Cindy Crawford: She sure knows how to pull off the "lady in red" look! This gown is perfect for her figure, and clearly this kind of dress is timeless!

Wendi Deng Murdoch: The pink sequins and tiara of this look are dazzling. This is every little girl's dream dress.

Priyanka Chopra: The simplicity of this gown is very effective, and I am a fan of this headdress as opposed to the ones that stand vertically in danger of falling off.

Lily Aldridge: As much as I hate the gap in her teeth, I can't deny how stunning she is in this classic Ralph Lauren yellow dress.

Nick Jonas: I've never been a big Jonas Brothers fan, but he looks very handsome! I like that the outfit isn't over-stated; it gets the point across without being garish.

WORST DRESSED

Cardi B: This was all just too much. From the high slit to the bustle in the back to the major cleavage and crazy head piece, you don't know where to look. You really just want to look away.

Solange Knowles - This is a Darth Vader vulva costume. Enough said.

The men of Migos: I don't really know who these guys are, but they look like the three blind mice in those sunglasses, and the suits are insane. I understand that women usually get more attention at these kinds of events because of their amazing gowns as opposed to men's standard tuxedos, but clearly there's a good reason for that.

Katy Perry - I'm not a Katy Perry fan to begin with, and these obnoxious wings aren't helping that situation. This costume is NOT fashion, but just a cry for attention from a star who is fading (I haven't kept up with any of her music since Roar). The only time wings like these are appropriate are during the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, and Katy Perry ain't no Angel.

Frances McDormand: I don't know what's going on here. I don't see the theme, and all I'm wondering is if she could even really see anything.

Shailene Woodley: I get the Joan of Arc reference, but it's so literal that it's a costume, not fashion. Ralph Lauren designed this dress, and I bet Woodley wishes she had been offered Lily Aldridge's yellow gown instead.

 And she almost looks like a pirate.

Anne Hathaway: I don't like her to begin with, and this floofy red bag of a dress isn't winning her any favors with me.

SZA- This is a tutu gone wrong. And what's with the random pieces of gold flakes on her face?

Diane Kruger: This is what I call a "cupcake" dress: It has an empire waste which makes the dress balloon out, which is perfect for covering up a tummy that enjoys too many cupcakes. OR she could be covering a baby bump, and I'm not the only one speculating about that. Either way, I don't like the unflattering silhouette of a cupcake dress, and no massive train can change that.

Mindy Kaling: While I hate to rag on this fellow Dartmouth grad, she looks like a Disney princess gone wrong. The simplicity of the dress and gloves come off as boring rather than chic, and the oversized crown is a bit cartoon-ish.

Greta Gerwig: I don't even think I need to explain why I don't like this outfit. I mean, why?!

Cynthia Erivo: Bejeweled eyebrows? Who does she think she is, Oprah Winfrey in A Wrinkle in Time? And I cannot think of a more awkward place to have a cut-out in a dress

Christian Combs: Clearly trying to be cool like his daddy (he is the spitting image of Sean Combs, though). Like other outfits in my "worst" category, this ensemble is so ornate and gaudy that it's no longer fashion, just dress-up.

WORST DRESSED - Subcategory: Nightgowns
I'm not sure how nighties fit into the "Heavenly Bodies" theme, but a couple women were on the same wavelength, including Selena Gomez, Sarah Paulson, Ruth Negga, and even Anna Wintour, the mother of fashion editorial herself..

TORN
This are outfits that I didn't love or hate. There was just something a bit off for me.

Kim Kardashian: and Emily Ratajkowski look stunning in their gold dresses, but they also remind me of C-3PO. But I will say that these curve-hugging gowns show off THEIR heavenly bodies!

Madonna: I love the crown the best, and the cross-shaped cutout is clever. This outfit definitely screams her style. But it also just looks like a big black dress; I feel like the top and bottom don't really match.

But I LOVE that she performed "Like a Prayer" at the Met Gala. That is AMAZING. Watch below:

Ariana Grande: The fact that the dress features Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel paintings is very cool. But her trademark bow/bunny ears/cat ears takes away from the maturity of the dress.

Bella Hadid: I think this dress really compliments her figure, but it's a little too Maleficent/evil queen for me.

Cam Newton: First of all, I thought Tom Brady was the only football player at this event. But anyway... I don't hate this jacket; I think it's pretty cool. But pairing it with the oversized glasses and wide-brimmed hat brings the whole look down.

Cara Delevigne: I don't really like this outfit, but the reason it makes my "torn" list is because I don't think Cara is pretty (I honestly have no idea how she is famous with that masculine chin and those thick, hooded brows), and this headpiece covers her face from my view.

Donatella Versace and Mary J. Blige were twinsies at the Met Gala (both looks are designed by Versace). The swirly, over-the-knee boots are more flashy and less classy than I would expect at an event like this. These middle-aged women certainly are making a statement, but what are they trying to say?

Sarah Jessica Parker: When I saw this outfit, all I could think was, "Another big headdress" (she wore one to the Met Gala in 2015). The gown is a piece of art, but when you add a nativity scene in a birdcage on top of your head, then the entire outfit seems like a joke. Less is more, SJP!

But I digress. Moving on...

Kendall Jenner: From the shoulders up she looks amazing, and those pants do wonders for her tush. But who ever heard of a pair of pants with a train? It just looks like the tailor forgot to hem them.

Giselle Bündchen and Tom Brady: They look gorgeous as usual, but they also remind me of Beauty and the Beast; Giselle's in a yellow gown, and Tommy looks like the beast all dressed up after he's transformed back into a man.

Zendaya and Michelle Williams both had the same warrior/chain mail vibes going on. While they aren't horrible (and I love how they both shimmer), I can't say I'm a big fan of either gown.

Nikki Minaj: This is a beautiful dress, and I especially appreciate the ombre effect on the gown. But the cape with the enormous train is too reminiscent of Rihanna's yellow number a few years ago, and RiRi wore it better.

Alessandro Michele, Lana Del Rey and Jared Leto: First of all, matching outfits always looks a bit kitschy (think Destiny's Child). And I suppose the Jesus vibe that both men are giving off is appropriate for the theme, but it's a bit much. And I'm not digging the dagger-in-the-heart chest plate that Lana is wearing; it's a bit violent, don't you think?
